Abstract

PURPOSE: To immobilize an enzyme at a high immobilizing ratio, by giving a porous structure to a hydrophobic polymeric matrix, and entrapping an enzyme therein.
CONSTITUTION: One or two or more hydrophobic polymerizable monomers polymerizable at 0°C or below, e.g. glycidyl methacrylate or ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, are added to a buffer solution at a suitable pH containing one or two or more enzymes, and if necessary a solvent capable of dissolving both of the buffer solution and the monomers, e.g. polyethylene glycol or an alcohol, is added thereto, or a hydrophilic polymerizable monomer, e.g. hydroxyethyl methacrylate or hydroxyethyl acrylate, is added thereto. The resultant mixture is then mixed thoroughly under mechanical stirring to form a water-in-oil emulsion, which is then irradiated with light or ionizing radiation to polymerize the hydrophobic polymerizable monomers.
