Abstract
PURPOSE: To improve durability and improve permanent set resistance by quickly heating a coil material obtained by cold-coiling and cutting to above an austenitization temp. then subjecting the same to hardening and tempering.
CONSTITUTION: A blank wire marerial as rolled is fed continuously to a coiling machine after pickling and scalping and drawing processes for the purpose of controlling wire sizes, whereby it is cold-formed to a coil of a desired-barrel shape; thereafter it is cut and a coil material is obtained. This coil material is quickly heated by direct electric conduction such as gripping both terminals thereof with clamp type electrodes or the like. When the entire section of the wire material attains a temp. above its austenitizatin temp., for example, 900W1,000°C, the electric conduction is stopped, whereby it is hardened. Thence, it is tempered at ordinary tempering temps. in an electric furnace, after which it is subjected to post treatments such as shot peening, whereby the barrel-shaped coil spring is obtained.
