Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a high-strength Cu alloy with superior wear resistance under high-speed and high-load sliding conditions by increasing the Ni content of an Mn-Si brass alloy and adding Sn.
CONSTITUTION: This high-strength Cu alloy consists of 20W40% Zn, 2W5% Al, 0.75W7.5% Mn, 0.25W2.5% Si, 0.5W5% Ni, 0.01W0.2% Cr, 0.1W2% Sn and the balance Cu with impurities. Ni forms Ni-Al and Ni-Si intermetallic compounds to strengthen the matrix phase, and it has an effect of inhibiting the growth of Mn5Si3 intermetallic compound crystallized in the matrix phase and making the compound fine. Less than the lower limit of Ni produces the effect hardly, and more than the upper limit of Ni requires a rise of the casting temp. and deteriorates the soundness of the ingot. Sn provides superior wear resistance and enhances the corrosion resistance, yet less than the lower limit of Sn does not produce the effect, and more than the upper limit of Sn causes inverse segregation to the ingot.
