Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain easily high field switching characteristics and to prevent the degradation of a display picture, by using a transparent conductive electrode which is patterned into a grid of parallel crosses. CONSTITUTION:A transparent conductive electrode 1 which is formed into a grid of parallel crosses and consists of indium oxide is provided on a glass substrate 10, and a photoconductor 2 consisting of cadmium sulfide, a light shielding layer 3 consisting of tellurium sulfide, and a dielectrixc multilayered film reflective mirror 4 consisting of zinc sulfide and magnesium fluoride are provided on this electrode 1, and a spacer 6 consisting of a ''Teflon '' sheet is put on the reflective mirror 4. This spacer 6 is held between the reflective mirror 4 and a glass substrate 10' provided with a transparent conductive electrode 1' similarly to the substrate 10, and the space formed by the spacer 6 is filled up with liquid crystal materials having the electrooptical effect. By this structure, when a field is applied to the element and the light is irradiated to it, the photoconductor becomes conductive to apply the field to the display layer, and thus, a pattern corresponding to irradiation of the light is formed by the electrooptical effect.
