Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce electrolytic voltage by providing a porous thin layer which decreases bubbling resistance of the gases produced in electrodes on an exchange membrane surface in electrolytic method using an ion exchange membrane. CONSTITUTION:In an electrolytic method for, the example, alkali halide salt and the like using a cation exchange membrane between cathode and anode and accompanying the production of gases with electrodes, a porous thin layer is provided on at least one surface, particularly, cathode side membrane surface, of a cation exchange membrane. This thin layer is simply required to be formed to have a smooth membrane surface to the extent of not degrading the ion permeation function of the cation exchange membrane and not increasing its electric resistance. Hence, this thin layer is not always of a continuous laminar shape, and may be in the state of granular materials interspersed in the film. The materials forming the thin layer are various metals, glass and the like. If such thin layer is used, the electrolytic voltage is decreased considerably without increasing in spite of making the spacing between the cation exchange membrane and the electrodes as narrow as possible.
