Abstract

PURPOSE: The titled composition, having excellent stability of a dye due to a slight reduction in absorbance, capable of assuming improved blue contrast, and containing an anthraquinone dye expressed by a specific structural formula.
CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystalline composition prepared by adding one or more multicolor anthraquinone dyes expressed by formula I (X is O or S; R is hydroxyl, alkoxyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, etc.) and a chiral nematic compound, e.g. 4-(2-methylbutyl)-4'-cyanobiphenyl, as an optically active substance to a nematic liquid crystal, e.g. the phenylcyclohexane or biphenyl type. The anthraquinone dye is obtained by reducing a compound expressed by formula II.
