Abstract
PURPOSE: A guest-host type liquid crystal composition, having a high order parameter and extinction coefficient and improved stability, solubility and electrical characteristics, and comprising a nematic liquid crystal and an anthraquinone dye expressed by a specific structural formula.
CONSTITUTION: A composition comprising (A) a nematic liquid crystal, e.g. phenylcyclohexane type, and (B) a chiral nematic compound, e.g. a compound having 2-methylbutyl group introduced into a nematic liquid crystal, as an optically active substance, and (C) one or more types of anthraquionone dyes expressed by formula I (R1 is H, alkyl, alkoxyl, etc.) as a multicolor dye. The component (C) is obtained by reacting sodium 1-amino-4-bromoanthraquinone-2-sulfonate with aniline, etc., and removing the sulfonic acid group from the resultant 1,4- diaminoanthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid derivative of formula II (R is the same as in formula I).
