Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide the best performance of fuel consumption in the fuel injection type internal combustion engine in which fuel is directly injected into a combustion chamber and the injected fuel is ignited by an ignition plug by a method wherein a fuel injection timing and ignition timing are controlled while an engine knocking condition is being detected. CONSTITUTION:There is provided a control device 5 for controlling a fuel injection valve 2 for use in directly injecting the fuel in the combustion chamber, and ignition plug 3 for use in igniting the mixture layer of injected fuel and air. The control device 5 is provided with a calculation circuit 8 to which the signals are fed from the knocking sensor 4, sensor 6 for the number of rotation of the engine, and engine load sensor 7. The calculation circuit 8 selects a value of the memory circuit 12 storing the most suitable fuel injection timing and ignition timing defined in response to the engine load and the number of revolution of the engine in response to an operating condition and corrected based on a knocking condition, then inputted to the driving circuit 13.
