Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for a heat-resistant resin, etc., by the fractional distillation of the reaction mixture of a phenol with methanol in the vapor phase in the prepsence of a catalyst, and treating the resultant cresol-containing fraction with methanol, phenol or/and steam.
CONSTITUTION: After phenol is reacted with methanol in the vapor phase in the presence of a catalyst, the solution of the reaction product is distilled to give a creso- containing fraction at the top of the column and a fraction containing di- and trimethylphenols at the bottom of the column. The fraction at the bottom of the column scarcely contains cresol and high-purity dimethylphenol is readily separated and purified. Although the separation of the dimethylphenol from said cresol-containing fraction is very difficult, high-purity dimethylphenol can also be obtained from said fraction by the treatment with methanol, phenol or/and steam industrially and advantageously.
