Abstract

PURPOSE:To advantageously obtain the titled compound which is a raw material for higher surfactants without using a catalyst and causing side reaction, by adding benzoyl chloride to a fatty acid, heating the resultant mixture to provide a mixed solution of a fatty acid chloride and benzoic acid, distilling the solution under specific condition of reduced pressure, distilling off and separating the fatty acid chloride. CONSTITUTION:Benzoyl chloride is added to a fatty acid and the resultant mixture is heated to provide a mixed solution of a fatty acid chloride and benzoic acid. The obtained mixed solution is then distilled in the presence of diphenyl ether at <=120 deg.C temperature under reduced pressure to distil off, separate and remove the benzoic acid content in the reaction solution therefrom. The amount of the added diphenyl ether is 1mol. - slight excess of 1mol. benzoic acid in the reaction solution. The unreacted benzoyl chloride present in the reaction solution is distilled off at 80-88 deg.C under 20mmHg column top pressure and then the diphenyl ether is distilled off at 100-110 deg.C under 5-6mmHg column to pressure. The benzoic acid is also distilled off, forming an azeotropic mixture with the diphenyl ether. The aimed compound is obtained as a still residue.
