Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the abrasion resistance, heat resistance, etc. of a covering layer comprising a radiation irradiation crosslinkable polymer material by applying said covering on an optical fiber strand.
CONSTITUTION: Modified silicone is coated on an optical fiber strand 1 of doped quartz glass to form a primary coating 2, after which the modified silicone having been mixed with carbon powder at 2:1 etc. in weight ratio is coated thereon to form a cushion layer 3. Next, a covering layer 4 is applied thereon by extrusion molding of a polymer material such as high-density polyethylene, after which electron beams are irradiated thereto by using an electron beam accelerator under conditions of 300kV voltage, 33mA current, 150mm/min transfer speed, etc. Thereby, the abrasion resistance and heat resistance of the optical fiber strand may be improved at low transmission characteristic losses without producing any coloring center therein.
