Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce the internal resistance, increase the discharge performance and lengthen the preservation time of an alkaline battery by employing a separator made of a graft-copolymer of polypropylene or the like and a polymer of a vinyl compound. CONSTITUTION:A positive case 2 which is filled with a positive mixture 3 containing silver oxide or the like, is placed in a metal exterior case 1 that also serves as a positive terminal. A separator 4 is placed on the positive mixture 3, an electrolyte- holding material 5 is placed on the separator 4, and a gellike negative electrode 6 made of zinc is placed on the electrolyte-holding material 5. Next, an insulating gasket 8 is fixed around a sealing plate 7, and these two are placed on the negative electrode 6 to hermetically seal the battery, and the whole constitutes an alkaline battery. The separator 4 of such a battery is prepared from a graft-copolymer of a polymer of a vinyl compound and either polypropylene or a copolymer of ethylene and propylene. The vinyl compound is preferably an acrylate, a methacrylate, a vinyl ester or acrylonitrile.
