Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase the rate of copolymerization and to obtain maleinized polyvinyl alcohol having excellent solubility, by reacting vinyl acetate with maleic acid in the presence of an alkali, and thereafter saponifying the product.
CONSTITUTION: Vinyl acetate is reacted with maleic acid or maleic anhydride in the presence of an alkali in an amount of 0.5W2.0mol eq., based on maleic acid or maleic anhydride, in an organic solvent, and then the product is saponified. The amount of alkali used is 0.5W2.0mol eq., based on maleic acid or anhydride thereof. Use of below 0.5mol eq. does not provide improved copolymerizability and water solubility, whereas use of above 2.0mol eq. results in hydrolysis of vinyl acetate and consequent formation of formaldehyde, which unfavorably inhibits the polymerization.
