Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the transparency of a saponified product of an ethylene- vinyl acetate copolymer, by a method wherein the saponified product of the ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer is contacted with a soln. contg. sulfuric acid.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A saponified product of an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer is contacted with (B) a soln. contg. sulfuric acid to improve the transparency of said saponified product. Examples of (A) are highly saponified products having a composition consisting of 50W90wt% of ethylene unit, 0W35wt% of vinyl acetate unit and 7W50wt% of vinyl alcohol unit. Examples of (B) are a 1W4C lower alcohol soln. contg. 0.5W5wt% of sulfuric acid, or a mixed soln. consisting of 1W4C lower alcohol and water in a weight ratio of alcohol to water of 2 to 8 and contg. 0.5W5wt% of sulfuric acid. The (B) is used in an amount of pref. 100W500wt% based on the weight of (A). Pref. the contact temp. is 10W80°C and the contact time is 4W12hr.
