Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a perfume or an intermediate for other substances in high yield, by reacting a 2-alkoxyphenol with an aqueous solution of a glyoxylate in a specific concentration in the presence of an alkali.
CONSTITUTION: One mole of a 2-alkoxyphenol is reacted with 2W3mol of a glyoxylate in a 1W3mol/l aqueous solution in the presence of an alkali, e.g. an alkali metal hydroxide, at 30W70°C to give a 2-alkoxy-4,6-di(hydroxycarboxymethyl)phenol. The amount of the alkali is 1mol or less per mole of the 2-alkoxyphenol.
