Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A 4-(4-trans-n-alkylcyclohexyl)-4'-fluorobiphenyl expressed by formula I (R is 1W9C straight chain alkyl).
USE: A liquid crystal substance, having the positive dielectric anisotropy, exhibiting the nematic phase at a comparatively high temperature range, a very low viscosity even with three 6-membered carbon rings and excellent properties in combination with the known liquid crystal compounds.
PROCESS: 4-Bromo-4'-aminobiphenyl of formula II is diazotized and reacted with fluoroboric acid or a sodium salt thereof. The resultant compound is then thermally decomposed to give 4-bromo-4'-fluorobiphenyl of formula V, which is then reacted with butyllithium to substitute Br with Li and then reacted with an alkylcyclohexanone. The product is subjected to the thermal dehydration to give a compound of formula VIII, which is hydrogenated.
