Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A p-substituted phenyl ester of 4'-(trans-4"-alkylcyclohexyl)-4- biphenylcarboxylic acid shown by the formula (R is H or 1W9C alkyl; X is CN, F, Cl, Br).
EXAMPLE: 4'-(Trans-4"-pentylcyclohexyl)-4-biphenyl carboxylic acid 4'''-cyanophenyl ester.
USE: A material for liquid crystal. A compound having a wide range of liquid crystal temperature, extremely high transparent point and improved stability, capable of being used by blending it with other liquid crystal compound. Useful for raising the transparent point of a liquid crystal composition, and widening the range of liquid crystal temperature, and suitable as a high-temperature liquid crystal component.
PROCESS: For example, 4'-(trans-4"-alkylcyclohexyl)-4-biphenyl-carboxylic acid is reacted with thionyl chloride, to give an acid chloride, which is reacted with a p- substituted phenol in pyridine, to give a compound shown by the formula.
