Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the contrast without darkening the display surface by subjecting pigment-added liquid crystal molecules to inclined longitudinal orientation and by placing a special wavelength plate and a reflecting plate on the back surface of a transparent electrode. CONSTITUTION:A nematic liquid crystal 14, having a negative dielectric anisotropy, to which a dichromatic pigment 15 was added is oriented longitudinally in an inclined form to be put between transparent elecdrodes 12, 17. A 1/4 wavelength plate 23 and a reflecting plate 20 are placed on the back of a glass substrate 18 supporting this transparent electrode 17. A light having an electric field vector crossed at right angles to the direction of the long axis of dichromatic pigment molecules at the incident time, when it is reflected at a reflecting plate 20 and returns to the liquid crystal, is rotated by pi/2, after changing to a light having an electric vector with the same direction as that of the long axis of a dichromatic pigment molecule, is absorbed to the dichromatic pigment. The light which does not contribute to the light absorption of the dichromatic pigment molecules goes out as it is as a reflected light. As a result, the contrast of the display is improved without darkening the display surface.
