Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent generation of black smoke, by producing strong turbulence in the combustion chamber and to make the combustion efficiently by forming two chambers having particular shapes and sizes in the top surface of a piston in the manner that they extend inward from the top surface of the piston, and dividing these two chambers from each other by shelves.
CONSTITUTION: A combustion chamber is formed by the first chamer 1 opened in the top surface of a piston P and the second chamber 2 formed under the first chamber 1, which chambers 1, 2 are divided from each other by a projection 3 formed on the peripheral wall. The inner wall surface 11 of the first chamber 1 is defined as a portion of the outer peripheral surface of an imaginary annular tube R1 disposed around the center line Y of the first chamber 1 and it is shaped to have an arcuate surface having a radius r1 of curvature. On the other hand, most of the inner wall surface 21 and the peripheral bottom surface 22 of the second chamber 2 are defined as a portion of the outer surface of an imaginary annular tube R2, and they are shaped to have an arcuate surface having a radius r2 (>r1) of curvature. Further, the projection 3 is shaped to have a lower surface conforming to the peripheral surface of the imaginary annular tube R2 which has a generating line parallel to the tangent T2 drawn from the upper end of the inner wall surface 21 of the chamber 2.
