Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain uniform charging characteristics continuously and improve safety by allowing a charging belt having resistivity to contact a photoreceptor in a manner as to differ in peripheral speed from this and applying voltage thereto from a power feed means thereby providing a potential gradient. CONSTITUTION:This consists of a charging belt 22 which is put on the 1st and 2nd rollers 20, 21, a driving mechanism 23 which runs this belt endless, and a power feed means 24. The belt 22 which has conductivity and of which the resistivity is, for example, 10<4>-10<10>OMEGAcm is used. In a charging device 11, the driving mechanism 23 operates along with the rotation of a photoreceptor 4, and rotates the 1st, 2nd rollers 20, 21 in the direction opposite to that of the photoreceptor 4, and at a peripheral speed slightly slower than this. Hence, the belt 22 runs endless and makes frictional contact with the peripheral wall of the photoreceptor 4, thereby enabling uniform contact to be achieved. In this way, damages of the photoreceptor are eliminate and continuous charging can be performed securely and uniformly.
