Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable the life of a lead acid battery to be judged by detecting the variations of the electric-resistance value which is due to structural change of an active material layer, and thereby detecting the deterioration conditions of the plate of the battery. CONSTITUTION:A pair of electrodes 2 and 2' are placed in parts of an active material layer 1, with a space between these electrodes 2 and 2'. A part of a positive assembled elements is provided with electrodes having a pair of probes 3 and 3' which are pressed into the active material layer 1, or else, these electrodes are fitted into appropriate positions of a positive plate. Current is fed across the electrodes 2 and 2' at given intervals during a cycle, and a voltmeter placed between the probes 3 and 3' measures IR drop which is due to the electric resistance of the layer 1. Since the increase in the electric resistance of the layer 1, and the decrease in the capacity of the layer 1 correlate with one another, the discharge capacity of the layer 1 can be accurately determined by measuring the variations in the electric resistance of the layer 1.
