Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide a title pigment having good dispersibility to coating material essentially consisting of organic solvent by using ferric hydoxide and a specific silane cpd. for surface treatment of red iron oxide particles.
CONSTITUTION: 100pts.wt. of red iron oxide α-Fe2O3 pigment particulates is dispersed into water, to which monovalent ferric salt such as FeCl3 and Fe(NO3)3 is added in amount of 1W10pts.wt. in Fe(OH)3 equivalence. Then, alkali such as NaOH and KOH is gradually added to form Fe(OH)3 layer on the surface of pigment particulates. The pigment is separated and dispersed into water. To this dispersion, silane cpd. of the formual X-(CH2)n-Si-(OR)3 (wherein X is CH2=CH-, or CH2=C(CH3)-COO-, or the formula; n=0W3; R is lower alkyl, lower alkoxy) is added and mixed so that silane cpd. is chemically combined on the surface of the pigment particulates surface.
