Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound easily, useful as an intermediate for a substituted phenylurea derivative having a good and selective herbicidal effect, by the reaction of 2-(4-methylphenyl)ethylamine with 4-nitrophenol, in the presence of a diazotation reagent of a primary amine.
CONSTITUTION: 2-(4-Methylphenyl)ethylamine is reacted with 4-nitrophenol, in the presence of a dizotation reagent of a primary amine, e.g. nitrous acid, nitrite, nitrosyl halogenide, nitrogen oxides, etc., to obtain 4-[2-(4-methylphenyl)ethoxy] nitrobenzene. The substituted phenylurea derivative produced from the object compound has a powerful herbicidal effect against various kinds of weeds in foliar treatment, and a selectivity towards rice and soybean plants.
