Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the toughness of steel and deterioration in wear resistance thereof at high temps. by adding a specified amt. of C, Si, Mn, Cr and Al to iron.
CONSTITUTION: A compsn. consisting of, by wt., C 0.40W0.60%, Si 0.80W1.70%, Mn 0.40W0.80%, Cr 0.60W2.00%, Al 0.20W1.00%, and the balance Fe and accompanying impurities is melted, refined, and made an ingot. This ingot is hot rolled to a predetermined form follwed by diffusion annealing at a temp. about 150°C above the AC3 transformation temp., austenitizing at a temp. about 50W 60°C above the AC3 transformation temp., oil hardening, and tempering at a predetermined temp. The resulting steel has high toughness and holds superior wear resistance even if the tip becomes hot when it is used as a cutting edge material, etc.
