Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a killed steel ingot for hot rolling which is free from surface defects by adding Zr instead of Ti in a limited amount such as to satisfy a specified relationship with the total amount of N, when continuously casting a B-containing steel of specified composition.
CONSTITUTION: A steel containing up to 0.50% of C, up to 0.75% of Si, up to 2.0% of Mn, up to 0.04% of P, up to 0.05% of S, up to 0.09% of Al, up to 0.01% of N and 0.005W0.06% of Zr as well as up to 0.003% of B, the balance being Fe and unavoidable impurities, wherein TatalZr-6.5TotalN≥0, is melted. Further, Mo or at least one member selected from the group consisting of Ni, Cr, Cu and W and the group consisting of rare earth metals, Ca and Hf is added to the steel in specified amounts, if required. The melted steel is continuously cast to produce a predetermined ingot. Accordingly, a killed steel ingot for hot rolling enhanced in required quality characteristics can be obtained while avoiding the generation of surface detects characteristic of B-containing steels.
