Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a cylindrical molding of uniform looking and thickness by loading, into a space surrounded by a cylindrical mold, a cylindrical sheet of polytetrafluoroethylene resin smaller than the space and heating the resin above its melting point.
CONSTITUTION: A mandrel 2 is inserted into a cylindrical mold 1, and in the space 4, a cylindrical sheet A' of polytetrafluoroethylene resin (PTFE) is loaded with its upper and lower edges contacted to the upper and lower clamping molds 3 and 3', and the mold 3 is fixed to the cylindrical mold 1 with bolts. At this time, the volume of the sheet A' at room temperatures is smaller than the volume of the space 4. Next, the mold containing the resin is loaded into an electric furnace and heated above the melting point (327°C) of PTFE to make the PTFE sheet A' expand in the mold space and fill the space 4 completely, and at the same time, make both butt ends welded by the expansion pressure. By taking out of the metal mold after cooled gradually, a cylinder A made of PTFE is obtained whose outer looking and thickness are uniform and whose butt ends are welded firmly.
