Abstract

PURPOSE: To treat nitrogen-contg. high BOD concn. sewage at a low cost by simultaneously carrying out activated sludge treatment and denitrification in a circulating aeration vessel whose inflow and discharge sides are under anaerobic and aerobic conditions, respectively.
CONSTITUTION: Sewage A contg. high concn. BOD and nitrogen, e.g. night soil type sewage is fed to inflow side 7 of aeration vessel 1. To side 7 aeration vessel mixed liquid c and sludge are returned from discharge side 6 of vessel 1 and settling pool 8, respectively to supply BOD oxidation bacteria, denitrification bacteria and nitrification bacteria. The front half part of vessel 1 is put in an anaerobic state to carry out denitrification, and the rear half part is put in an aerobic state to carry out nitrification. Ammonia in sewage A is converted into nitrogen oxides by nitrification, and the nitrogen oxides are denitrified to nitrogen gas using BOD constituents in sewage A as a carbon source. Thus, BOD treatment and denitrification are simultaneously carried out in single vessel 1 to reduce the cost.
