Abstract
PURPOSE:To stably manufacture the ultra-low-carbon stainless steel, by feeding the inert gas against the molten low carbon steel obtained in the vacuum refining furnace under the condition of the reduced pressure and the existence of the slag, and by feeding oxygen or inert gas through the immersed runs. CONSTITUTION:The molten stainless steel, being roughly refined by decarburization so as to include about 0.3% C, is poured into the ladle 1 which is then placed within the vacuum vessel 4. The inside of the vessel 4 is evacuated, and the inert gas is introduced through the porous plug 3 for stirring the molten steel; at the same time, the pure oxygen is introduced through the runs 5 so as to blow the oxygen against the upper zone of the molten steel to be refined; hereby, the carbon content is reduced to 0.01-0.02% C. Next, while the reduced pressure is being kept as it is, and the existence of the slag 6 at least 2.5kg per ton of molten steel is permitted, the inert gas is introduced through the porous plug 3; at the same time, the runs 5 is immersed into the molten steel, and the oxygen or inert gas is blown through the runs 5. According to this method, the ultra-low-carbon stainless steel with the carbon content reduced to about C<0.005% can be manufactured.
