Abstract
Pig-iron is refined in a vessel having a porous bottom through which is blown a major part of the oxygen required, the remainder of the oxygen together with lime suspended therein being blown downwardly into the iron from above the surface. The oxygen blown in from below may be diluted with argon or other inert gas the proportion of the latter being varied to control the agitation of the bath, or the oxygen may contain carbon dioxide or steam. Nitrogen may also be present if it is desired to increase the concentration thereof in the bath. Additional oxygen may be supplied to the space above the bath to burn the gases evolved; it preferably contains fine suspended particles to enhance heat transfer between the molten iron and the flame. The process may be carried out batchwise, in a converter of conventional shape, or may be carried out continuously, for which purpose a suitable apparatus is described. (see Division F4).
