Abstract
PURPOSE:To raise the yield of oxide powder formed and to increase the growing speed of an oxide powder layer by feeding glass component contg. raw material to the place of an oxyhydrogen flame in a liquefied state and by vaporizing the material on this side of the flame before contact. CONSTITUTION:When liquefied raw material for an optical fiber core is fed into jet pass 6 through pipe 12, it is vaporized with heater 16 at base end part 2' of jet pipe 2 and jetted from the tip of pipe 2. At the same time, Ar or the like, H2 and O2 are fed into feed passes 7, 8, 9 of flame protection pipe 3, H2 pipe 4 and O2 pipe 5 through feed pipes 17, 18, 19, respectively, and the gases are ignited and burned. Using the flame the vaporized raw material is hydrolyzed. While adhering the resulting oxide powder to a rotating stand plate (a place for depositing the powder), the powder is deposited in the axial direction. After forming a powder layer to a predetermined length, feed of the raw material from pipe 12 is stopped, and liquefied raw material for a clad is jetted from the tip of pipe 2 and hydrolyzed. The resulting oxide powder for the clad is deposited around the rodlike core powder layer.
