Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare piperonal useful as a raw material for cosmetics, perfumes, medicines, agricultural chemicals, etc., and brighteners for metal plating, in high conversion and selectivity, by oxidizing piperonyl alcohol with O2 in a basic aqueous medium in the presence of a platinum group metal catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Piperonal is prepared by oxidizing piperonyl alcohol with O2- containing gas in a basic aqueous medium in the presence of a platinum group metal catalyst, preferably a platinum group metal catalyst and an inorganic acid salt of a metal selected from lead, bismuth, silver and tin. The platinum group metal catalyst is pref. platinum and palladium. Coexistence of an inorganic acid salt of a metal selected from lead, bismuth, silver and tin, improves the conversion and the selectivity.
USE: Base for heliotrope perfume.
