Abstract

PURPOSE: Heated surface of polymer are treated with glow discharge under vacuum, thus improving the surface characteristics as adhesion, hydrophilic property, dyeability and reducing the yellowing caused by the glow discharge.
CONSTITUTION: In the treatment of polymer surfaces with glow discharge, the surfaces are heated, then subjected to discharge. The lower limit of the temperature of the heated polymer is decided according to kinds of polymer and uses but generally it is diffcult. Exceeding 50°C; however, gives remarkable effect. In the meantime, the upper limit is the temperature at which the polymer extremely softends and can not be handled and it depends on the melting point of the polymer. Generally, from a practical point of view the upper limit is the temperature about 10°C lower than the melting point or about 5°C lower than the glass transition point in noncrystalline polymers.
