Abstract

PURPOSE: To change the steering ratio in accordance with the rotational position of a steering wheel by providing a differential motion converting system in the midway of a steering wheel shaft and thereby changing the differential motion ratio of the system in relation to the rotational angle of the steering wheel shaft.
CONSTITUTION: When a steering wheel 2 is rotated, an external sun gear 5 connected with an upper-side steering wheel shaft 1 is rotated, while a rotational member 7 fixed to the shaft 1 is rotated concurrently and causes the displacement in the axial direction of a reciprocating member 9 which is engaged with the member 7 by screws, thereby an internal sun gear 13 being rotated. In the device, the rotational displacement quantity of the internal sun gear 13 can have a veriety of nonlinear characteristics by selecting the shape of a groove cam 12. In order to obtain a variable-ratio steering device, the shape of the cam is made to be the one which allows the internal sun gear 13 to rotate with the varied angle displacement ratio.
