Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare polyester which has a good transparency and color by polycondensation of bifunctional carboxylic acid comprising terephthalic acid mainly and glycol comprising ethylene glycol mainly in the presence of a specified sulfonic acid as catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Polyesters are prepared by polyconsansation reaction of (A) bifunctional carboxylic acid comprising therephthalic acid mainly and (B) glycol comprising ethylene glycol mianly in the presence of sulfonic acid as catalysts of the formula wherein Ar is benzene, naphthalene, X is -OR1, -COOR2, or -R3; m and n are 1W3; and said R1, R2, R3 are H, lower alkyl, and one or more substituents are -OR1, -COOR2 when said sulfonic acid has a nuclearsubstituent and X may be the same or different when n is 2 or more, in a molar ratio of sulfonic acid group to acid component which constitutes polyester product of 1×10-4:1W 10×10-4:1.
