Abstract
PURPOSE: To separate aminophenols useful as synthetic intermediates of drugs, control agents, dyes, etc. efficiently and to circulate a catalyst for reuse, by subjecting the reaction product of a dihydric phenol and an amination reagent to azeotroic distillation with a specific high-boiling organic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: A dihydric phenol (e.g., hydroquinone, resorcin) is reacted with an amination reagent (e.g., ammonia) in the presence of a water-soluble catalyst, and, if necessary, in a solvent, to give an aminophenol. In the process, an organic solvent (e.g., light oil) boiling above a temperature 50°C lower than the boiling point of the aminophenol and immiscible with it is added to the reaction mixture. The resulting mixture is distilled in the form of the azeotropic mixture of the aminophenol, the unreacted dihydric phenol and the solvent to isolate the aminophenol. The water-soluble catalyst contained in the residue of the still is circulated to the reaction system for reuse.
