Abstract

PURPOSE: To accurately set the polishing length of a core of an optical fiber by connecting softer second sleeve coaxially with the first sleeve having a length to be polished and polishing the first sleeve.
CONSTITUTION: The first sleeve 10 has a slightly larger inner diameter than the core of an optical fiber 8. The second sleeve 13 has a slightly larger inner diameter than a clad 11 with one closed end perforated with a small hole 12 having equal diameter to the inner diameter of the first sleeve 10, and is made of lower hardness material than the first sleeve 10. This first sleeve 10 is connected coaxially with the second sleeve 13 to thus form a polishing tool 14. The optical fiber 8 is centered at the polishing tool 14. The core 9 is inserted into the first sleeve 10. The separated end of the clad 11 is brought into contact with the inner surface of the closed end of the second sleeve 13. The core 9 is fixed to the first sleeve 10, and the clad 11 is fixed to the second sleeve 13. Thus the first sleeve 10 is polished to accurately control the polishing length of the core 9.
