Abstract

PURPOSE:To measure connection loss at the position where there is a connection point with high accuracy by entering light signal into an optical fiber from the position another from the opening face of the optical fiber existing before the connection part of the optical fibers. CONSTITUTION:When the light pulse signal generated by a light pulse signal generator 21 is condensed by a lens 22 and is entered to an optical fiber 18, the light signal is excited in its core. In this case, the excitation of the light smoetimes occurs in the fiber other than in its core and this becomes a measurement error and therefore this light is removed with a mode filter 24. Rayleigh scattering light is detected with a detection part 23 immedaite before the connecting part 19. This detection light is synchronized to the pulse signal from the light pulse signal generator 21 and is amplified in a lock-in amplifier 25 and is indicated in an indicator 26. This value is let to be M1. Next, the Rayleigh scattering light in the fiber 20 is measured and the value thereof is let to be M2, then the connection loss S is given by S=10 log M1/M2.
