Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the amount of expensive glass fibers used and to obtain a molded article, e.g., a bathtub, with a low flow resistance at low cost, by using splinters of saturated polyester fibers as a reinforcement as well as chopped strands glass fibers.
CONSTITUTION: The heated male mold 1 is covered with the surface mat 6 and the polyester pattern fabric 3, on which a sheet molding compound of a fiber reinforced plastic blended with chopped strands of glass fibers and splinters of polyester fibers as reinforcements is put. The female mold 2 is placed on the sheet molding compound. When the molds l and 2 are pressed, the resin in the molten fiber reinforced plastic is transferred through the fabric with pattern to the surface mat 6 to form the clear layer 5. The molds are opened to take out a molded article, e.g., a bathtub.
