(57)【要約】 【課題】 マルチメディアの選択制御装置およびマルチ
メディアサービスの提供方法を提供する。 【解決手段】 本発明は、通信メディアを介して一つま
たはそれ以上のサービスをユーザに提供する電子サービ
スの選択をユーザが制御することができる装置及びその
方法を提供する。この装置にはオブジェクト上にあるマ
ークを読み取るためにスキャナ方式を用いる。また、要
求信号を通信するために、読み取りマークを表示するオ
ブジェクトコードでユーザインターフェースと通信す
る。インターフェースは要求信号を受信し、要求コマン

【発明の詳細な説明】
【０００１】
【発明の属する技術分野】本発明はマルチメディアシス
テムに関し、特に、マルチメディアシステムに対するア
クセスを制御する方法及び装置に関する。
【０００２】
【従来の技術】将来、対話型電子サービス、ビデオ−オ
ン−デマンドおよび「情報スーパーハイウェイ」は数千
本の映画、ホームショーピング情報、ゲーム、及び他の
マルチメディアドキュメントへのアクセスを提供する。
しかし、これらのシステムを使用するに際して、如何に
して数多くの選択をざっと見て何が提供されているのか
を理解し、興味のあるものを選択するかは重要な課題で
ある。この問題を解決する従来の方法においては、チャ
ネルサーフィンを行ったり、他の映画へのアクセスのき
かっけとなる試写チャネルにおける広告などを使用した
り、選択するためにユーザがリモート制御で操縦できる
階層状のメニューを使用したりする。しかし、このよう
な手法では、利用可能な数千のマルチメディアドキュメ
ントのシステムに対して簡単には対応しきれない。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】対話型テレビ（ＩＴ
Ｖ）システムは現在ＰＣユーザインターフェースで行わ
れているように、画面で情報をユーザに表示することが
できる。しかし、これらのＩＴＶシステムは、ＮＴＳＣ
画面の低い解像度及び部屋内の至る所から利用可能なポ
インティング装置の低い解像度により制限される。大き
な数の選択項の中から速やかに所望のものを選択するこ
とに対しては、ＩＴＶシステムの使用は時間がかかり、
不都合であった。

【課題を解決するための手段】前記課題を解決するため
に、本発明は、通信メディアを介して一つ以上のサービ
スをユーザに提供する電子サービスの選択をユーザが制
御することができる装置及びその方法を提供する。この
装置はオブジェクト上にあるマークを読み取るためにス
キャナ方式を用いる。また、要求信号を通信するため
に、読み取りマークを表示するオブジェクトコードでユ
ーザインターフェースと通信する。インターフェースは
要求信号を受信し、要求コマンドをサービス提供者に伝
送する。この要求コマンドにはインターフェース識別コ
ード及び所望の電子マルチメディアサービスを選択する
オブジェクトコードを含む。このため、この装置はサー
ビス提供者から選択された電子サービスをユーザの受信
装置に伝送し、受信させることができる。本発明の一実
施例においては、サービス提供者はマルチメディアサー
ビス提供者で、電子サービスはマルチメディアの番組で
ある。
【０００５】本発明の他の実施例によれば、スキャナ手
段は赤外線リンク、ラジオリンク、または有線接続を介
してインターフェース手段と通信する。スキャナ手段は

【発明の実施の形態】本発明においては、人間が紙製の
カタログ、雑誌及び書籍を素早くめくり、写真及びテキ
ストをちらりと見ることを非常に得意とすることに着目
した。現像されたカラー写真の集まりは一組のＮＴＳＣ
イメージを見るよりも遥かに簡単で且つ速い。紙は幾つ
かの有用な特性を有する。紙は非常に簡単で速く読ま
れ、マークされ、操作され、携帯性がよく、扱いがなれ
ており、簡単に配布できるといった数多くの特性をもっ
ている。多くの電子システムが紙の代替となるべく試み
たが、よりよい方法として、紙を用いて、マルチメディ
ア情報へのアクセスをより便利に提供できる。
【０００７】例えば、米国特許第４９４７０２８号(J.
M. Gorog,１９９３年６月８日)においては、ScanFone
（米国商標）を用いた自動化注文及び支払いシステムを
開示した。このScanFoneはクレジットカード読み取り
器、小さいアルファ数字ディスプレイおよびバーコード
スキャナを有する電話機である。顧客はScanFoneを利用
して、請求に対する支払いを行ったり、カタログ上のバ
ーコードをスキャンすることによって商品を注文したり
する。これは、電子支援のカタログ通信販売の応用であ
る。しかしながら、これは電話をベースしたものであ
り、既存の接続を介してユーザのマルチメディア端末
（例えば、テレビ）にマルチメディア信号を伝送するこ
とはない。
【０００８】図１に本発明のシステムを示す。このシス
テムには１個または複数個のハンドスキャナつまりペン
１１を含み、これを用いてオブジェクト表面におけるマ
ーク（例えば、バーコード、英数字、またはゼロックス
グリーフ）を読み取る。このオブジェクトは紙、プラス
チックまたは他の材料でもよい。オブジェクトは搭載さ

スキャナペンとワイヤパス１８）、赤外線リンク、また
はラジオリンク１２のいずれかを使ってユーザインター
フェースユニット１５（例えば、テレビ上のボックス）
と通信する。
【００１１】図４にはスキャナペン１１を示す。スキャ
ナペン１１にはスキャンされるオブジェクト上のマーク
を読みとるスキャンヘッド４０１を含む。トランシーバ
４０２はラジオリンク１２を介してスキャンヘッド４０

に識別するのに使用される。インターフェース１５にお
いて、制御器はスキャナＩＤコードを予め記憶された権
限テーブルと比較し、ユーザの要求が権限を有するもの

ービスに対するユーザの要求は親のスキャナペンにのみ
その権限を与えることができ、子供のスキャナペンには
与えないとすることができる。権限を有している場合、

コマンドをサービス提供者１７に送信する。そして、サ
ービス提供者１７がこのスキャナＩＤコードを利用して
ユーザ要求コマンドにより指定されたサービスに対して
請求する。
【００１４】オプションとして、可聴変換器をスキャナ
ペン１１に備え付けることも可能である。これにより、
オブジェクトのスキャンが成功し、及び／またはインタ
ーフェース１５がスキャナペンからの送信を受信したこ
とをユーザに可聴的にフェードバックする。当然のこと
ながら、インターフェース１５は、ディスプレイユニッ

【００１７】マルチメディアサーバ１３は一つのサービ
ス提供者１７と単独に、または複数のサービス提供者１
７と共同で多量の映画、映画試写、ゲーム、またはユー
ザにより電気的にアクセス可能な任意の他の周知の情報
にアクセスし、またはこれらのマルチメディア情報を記
憶する。マルチメディアサーバ１３、１７は前もって制
作されたマルチメディア番組、教育マルチメディア番
組、ライブマルチメディア番組などの様々なマルチメデ
ィアサービスを提供することができる。このマルチメデ
ィアサービスには、前もって制作されたビデオ映画試写
オン−デマンド、ビデオ、ゲームなどを含んでいる。ま

ば、人間またはコンピュータにライブ接続して、ユーザ
に付加の情報を提供する。ユーザは電話１９ａを介して
人間と交流し、またはコンピュータと対話する。
【００１８】本発明においては、マルチメディアサーバ
１３、１７は最も一般的にはユーザにオーデオ番組、ビ
デオ番組または電子ドキュメントを提供するために用い
られる。マルチメディアサーバ１３は同時に数千の顧客
からのサービス要求を提供することができる。一旦、ユ
ーザの入力した選択が処理されると、サーバ１３はマル
チメディアデータまたは番組をインターフェースユニッ
ト１５に送信し、インターフェース１５はユーザのテレ
ビ（ＴＶ）受信器１６にそれを表示する。
【００１９】サーバ１３および１７は通信ネットワーク
１４に接続される一つまたは複数の対話式テレビ（ＩＴ
Ｖ）ネットワーク１８の一部にもなりうる。この対話式
テレビ（ＩＴＶ）ネットワークは本発明の出願人の他の
米国特許出願番号第０７／９６５４９２号("Interactiv
e Television Converter", October 23, 1992)、第０７
／９９７９８５号（"Program Server For Interactive
television System",December 28, 1992）、第０８／０
５６９７３号("Interactive Television Services Syst
em", May 3, 1993)、第０８／０５６９７４号("System
for ComposingMultimedia Signals For Interactive Te
levision Services", May 3, 1993)に開示されている。
ＩＴＶネットワーク１８はビデオ−オン−デマンドサー
バ、対話式ＴＶサーバ、ビデオ電話サーバ、放送ＴＶサ
ーバ、ゲームサーバ及びユーザ制御パネルサーバを含ん
だ大型グローバルサーバネットの一部でもよい。
【００２０】通信ネットワーク１４は国内または国際の
非同期伝送モード（ＡＴＭ）ネットワークを含むことが
できる。本発明によれば、ユニバーサルＩＤはネットワ
ーク上にあるすべてのアクセス可能な電子オブジェクト
を唯一に識別するのに使用される（スーパー電話番号の
ようなものである）。スキャナペン（以下ペンと称す
る）１１の使用方法の一つとしては、ＩＴＶネットワー
ク１８上にあるアクセス可能な電子オブジェクトに対し
て唯一の識別コードを表示するマーク１０と併用するも
のである。これらのコードは周知のＮＣＳＡのMosaic
（インタネット上ＷＷＷ（World Wide Web）にアクセス
するクライアントソフトウェア）に識別される「ユニバ
ーサルリソースロケータ」（Universal Resource Locat
or：ＵＲＬ）のように機能し、異なるのは、これはタイ
プ入力方式の代わりに紙から読み込み、あるいは不可視
的にリンクされたスクリーン上のボタンから読み取る。
アクセス可能なオブジェクトは非常に多いため、これら
のコードも非常に大きくなり、紙上に控え目に印刷する
には標準なバーコードは多すぎる。このような応用にお
いては、ゼロックスグリーフは有用である。なぜなら、
それは小さなスペースに多量のデータを符号化できるか
らである。
【００２１】もう一つの可能性としては、スキャナペン
１１が英数字をスキャンすることである。これらの文字
はマルチメディア番組に対して唯一の識別子としてもよ
いし、またはこれらの文字は一般的なテキストで、ＩＴ

メディアドキュメントに関連してもよい。サーバ１３、

選択し、それらを表示させる。このような方法の一つの
例としては、新聞及び雑誌に印刷されたニュースまたは
スポーツ記事のビデオクリップを抽出することである。

よっては、ＩＴＶネットワーク１８にある任意の電子オ
ブジェクトへのアクセスが一発で的中するか、または一
回以上の選択を必要とする場合、まず特定のサービスを
選択して、そして、サービス内のドメインを特定して、
最後に所望のサービスを規定する所定の電子オブジェク
トを指定する。
【００２３】図２にこのシステムの使用例を示す。ステ
ップ１では、ユーザはスキャナペン１１で紙カタログか
ら映画を選択し、この映画の記述文の隣にあるマークを
スキャンする。ペン１１は紙からスキャンした情報をイ
ンターフェースユニット１５（以下インターフェースと
も称する）に伝送する。ステップ２では、インターフェ
ース１５はペン１１から送られた情報を解読し、マルチ
メディアサーバと通信してユーザの選択した映画を要求
する。ステップ３では、サーバは映画を送信し、ＴＶモ
ニタ上に流し始める。理想的にはステップ２と３の間に
遅延はないが、もし遅れることがあるとしたら、マルチ
メディアサーバは、映画を抽出中である旨のメッセージ
をＴＶスクリーン上に表示する。
【００２４】この技術を用いて、ユーザは短い時間内で
素早く数多くの映画または録画したＴＶ番組を表示、ま
たは試写できる。決めた映画をオーダーするためには、
システムは試写の終了（または試写中）でユーザを催促
し、制御ボタン４０５の一つを用いてユーザの確認を要
求する。別法として、図２の１７に示すような予め定義
した制御マークを用いて、インターフェース１５とテレ
ビ１６の各機能を制御する。これらの機能には標準タイ
プのＶＴＲ制御機能（開始、停止、一時停止など）、及
び注文機能（例えば、「注文」マークを用いる）を含
む。図２に示すように、ユーザは予定した「注文」マー
クをスキャンして、試写している間に注文を出す。これ
らの予定したマークは同一のオブジェクト（カタログ、
カードなど）上に、または、一つまたはそれ以上のメニ
ューカード上に配置される。
【００２５】図３にはこのシステムを操作するステップ
のフローチャートを示す。ステップ３０１では、インタ
ーフェース１５とサーバ１３との間の通信が確立され
る。この操作は電話機１９ａを用いて電話コールで行う
ことができる。また、もし常時接続がセットアップされ
るならば、わずかな数のデータパケットがネットワーク
１４を介してインターフェース１５から適切なサーバ１
３へ送信されればすむ。サーバ１３の初期選択はペン１
１を用いてインターフェース１５に選択したサーバを知
らせる。ステップ３０２では、ユーザはペン１１を紙に
当てて、そこにあるマークをスキャンする。ステップ３
０２ａでは、ペン１１はオプションとして後ほどインタ
ーフェース１５に伝送するマーク情報を記憶する。ステ
ップ３０３では、前述したように、これらのマークはイ
ンターフェース１５に伝送する前にペン内で解読される
か、あるいは、ペンのコストを低減するために、ペン１
１は未処理のスキャン情報をインターフェース１５に伝

クセス 購読者が新聞紙または雑誌を読んでいるとき、彼らは関
連するビデオ画面を見てみたいと希望することがある。
スポーツページ（スポーツが表示される）においては、
キーイベント、例えば、オリンピックのスキーヤーが転
倒する瞬間や、優勝ゴールなどの画面は直ぐに要求に応
じて映し出される。ニュース記事に関しては、インタビ
ュー、音声効果、歴史または現在の決定的なビデオ画面
が直ぐに表示される。
【００２９】オン−デマンド型マルチメディア広告にリ
ンクした紙ベースの広告 今日多くの８００番（日本の０１２０フリーダイヤル）
コールは、新聞紙、雑誌またはダイレクトメール上の紙
媒体による広告により得られる情報で使用されている。
マルチメディア広告は同様な方法で行われる。本発明に
よれば、顧客は興味のある広告に表示されるバーコード
をなぞることにより、直ぐにマルチメディアによるプレ
ゼンテーションにアクセスできる。これらの広告によっ
て製造メーカーと対話することができ、それを注文する
ことも可能である。人がこの広告を読むだけでも製造メ
ーカーの更なる販売努力に有用である。
【００２０】講義およびテキストブック マルチメディア講義は紙ベースのテキストブックと結び
つけることができる。広範囲の閲読は紙上での方が容易
であるが、ある目的に対してはアニメーションによるビ
デオ解読やデモンストレーションがより効果的である。

のデモンストレーションを見ることができる。さらにこ
れらのバーコードはテキストブックを他の学生との活発
な討論グループに接続させ、または教授またはチュータ
と回線会話を行うことができる。

【発明の効果】前記課題を解決するために、本発明は、
通信メディアを介して一つ以上のサービスをユーザに提
供する電子サービスの選択をユーザが制御することがで
きる装置及びその方法を提供する。この装置はオブジェ
クト上にあるマークを読み取るためにスキャナ方式を用
いる。また、要求信号を通信するために、読み取りマー
クを表示するオブジェクトコードでユーザインターフェ
ースと通信する。インターフェースは要求信号を受信
し、要求コマンドをサービス提供者に伝送する。この要
求コマンドにはインターフェース識別コード及び所望の
電子マルチメディアサービスを選択するオブジェクトコ
ードを含む。このため、この装置はサービス提供者から
選択された電子サービスをユーザの受信装置に伝送し、
受信させることができる。本発明の一実施例において
は、サービス提供者はマルチメディアサービス提供者
で、電子サービスはマルチメディアの番組である。以上
述べたように、本発明の方法及び装置により、ネットワ
ーク上にある数多くのマルチメディアへのアクセスはオ
ブジェクト上のマークをスキャナペンで読みとることに
より制御することができ、数多くのマルチメディアに対
する選択が容易となる。

Claims (11)

    【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 【請求項１】 通信媒体を介してマルチメディアサーバ
    によりユーザへ提供される電子マルチメディアサービス
    のユーザによる選択を制御する装置において、 スキャナ手段（１１）を有し、このスキャナ手段は、ユ
    ーザの操作によりオブジェクト上のマークを読み取り、
    読み取ったマークを表わすオブジェクトコードを含む要
    求信号をユーザインターフェース（１５）に送信し、 前記スキャナ手段とユーザディスプレイ端末（１６）を
    通信媒体に連結させる前記インターフェースは、 前記スキャナ手段から要求信号を受信する受信手段（３
    ０４）と前記通信媒体を介してサーバに、インターフェ
    ース識別コードとサーバにより提供されるマルチメディ
    アサービスを選択するオブジェクトコードとを含んだ要
    求コマンドを送信する送信手段（３０５）と前記ディス
    プレイ端末に出力されるサーバからの選択されたマルチ
    メディアサービスを受信する手段（３０８）とを有する
    ことを特徴とするマルチメディアの選択制御装置。
  2. 【請求項２】 前記スキャナ手段は紙のオブジェクト上
    からマークを読み取ることを特徴とする請求項１の装
    置。
  3. 【請求項３】 前記インターフェースは前記要求信号の
    受信に応答してユーザに可視化フェードバックを提供す
    ることを特徴とする請求項１の装置。
  4. 【請求項４】 前記スキャナ手段は少なくとも英数字、
    ゼロックスグリーフ、バーコードからなるグループのう
    ち一つまたは複数のマークを読み取ることを特徴とする
    請求項１の装置。
  5. 【請求項５】 前記スキャナ手段は読み取ったマークを
    記憶する手段と、 ユーザにより操作され、前記インターフェースに対する
    オブジェクトコードの通信を制御する手段とを有するこ
    とを特徴とする請求項１の装置。
  6. 【請求項６】 前記スキャナ手段は前記インターフェー
    スに通信する要求信号にスキャナ識別コードを含むこと
    を特徴とする請求項１の装置。
  7. 【請求項７】 前記インターフェースはサーバに送信す
    る要求コマンドにスキャナ識別コードを含むことを特徴
    とする請求項１の装置。
  8. 【請求項８】 ユーザに電子マルチメディアサービスを
    提供する方法において、 ユーザ端末とマルチメディアサーバロケーションとの双
    方向通信接続を確立するステップ（３０１）と、ここで
    前記マルチメディアサーバから前記ユーザへの前記接続
    はビデオ信号を伝送することが可能であり、 ユーザに選択されたマルチメディアサービスを識別する
    マークをスキャンするステップ（３０２）と、 スキャンされたマークを一個以上のビデオ試写を識別す
    る第１コードとユーザ端末を識別する第２コードを含ん
    だ要求コマンドに変換するステップ（３０４）と、 確立された接続を介して、前記マルチメディアサーバロ
    ケーションに要求コマンドを通信するステップ（３０
    ５）と、前記マルチメディアサーバロケーションは複数
    のビデオ試写を含み、 マルチメディアサーバで受信された要求コマンドを用い
    て、マルチメディアサービスを選択するステップ（３０
    ６）と、 接続を介して、マルチメディアサーバロケーションから
    ユーザの端末に出力される選択されるマルチメディアサ
    ービスに関連するマルチメディア信号を送信するステッ
    プ（３０７）とを含むことを特徴とするマルチメディア
    サービスの提供方法。
  9. 【請求項９】 ユーザにビデオ試写−オン−デマンドサ
    ービスを提供する方法において、 ユーザ端末とマルチメディアサーバとの双方向通信接続
    を確立するステップ（３０１）と、 ユーザの端末でカタログからスキャンしたビデオ試写を
    識別するマークをスキャンするステップ（３０２）と、 スキャンされたマークを一個以上のビデオ試写を識別す
    る第１コードとユーザ端末を識別する第２コードを含ん
    だ要求コマンドに変換するステップ（３０４）と、 確立された接続を介して、前記マルチメディアサーバに
    要求コマンドを通信するステップ（３０５）と、 マルチメディアサーバで受信された要求コマンドを用い
    て、ビデオ試写を選択するステップ（３０６）と、 接続を介して、マルチメディアサーバからユーザの端末
    に出力される選択されたビデオ試写に関連するビデオ信
    号を送信するステップ（３０７）とを含むことを特徴と
    するビデオ試写−オン−デマンドサービスの提供方法。
  10. 【請求項１０】 ユーザに教育ビデオ番組−オン−デマ
    ンドサービスを提供する方法において、 ユーザから受信した要求コマンドに応答して、複数のア
    クセス可能なビデオ番組を有するマルチメディアサーバ
    （１８）を提供するステップと、 ユーザ端末とマルチメディアサーバロケーションとの通
    信接続を確立するステップ（３０１）と、 ユーザの端末でオブジェクトを識別するマークをスキャ
    ンするステップ（３０２）と、 スキャンされたマークを、オブジェクトを識別する第１
    コードとユーザのロケーションを識別する第２コードを
    含んだ要求コマンドに変換するステップ（３０４）と、 確立された接続を介して、前記マルチメディアサーバロ
    ケーションに要求コマンドを通信するステップ（３０
    ５）と、 マルチメディアサーバロケーションで、識別されたオブ
    ジェクトに関連した１個または複数のマルチメディアサ
    ービスを、少なくとも予め記憶された教育マルチメディ
    ア番組、人間とつながるライブマルチメディア接続、及
    びコンピュータワークステーションとつながるライブマ
    ルチメディア接続からなるグループから選択するステッ
    プ（３０６）と、 接続を介して、マルチメディアサーバロケーションから
    ユーザの端末に出力される選択されたマルチメディアサ
    ービスに関連するマルチメディア信号を送信するステッ
    プ（３０７）とを含むことを特徴とする教育ビデオ番組
    −オン−デマンドサービスの提供方法。
  11. 【請求項１１】 通信媒体を介してマルチメディアサー
    バによりユーザへ提供する電子マルチメディアサービス
    の選択をユーザが制御可能な装置において、 複数のマルチメディアサービスを含んだマルチメディア
    サーバ（１８）を有し、各マルチメディアサービスはユ
    ーザからの要求コマンドに応答して、ユーザへの通信媒
    体を介して通信され、 ユーザ端末は、 ユーザの操作によりオブジェクト上のマークを読み取
    り、読み取ったマークを表示するオブジェクトコードを
    含んだ要求信号をユーザインターフェース（１５）と通
    信するスキャナ手段（１１）と、 通信媒体を介して受信した選択されたマルチメディアサ
    ービスを出力するディスプレイ装置（１６）と、 スキャナ手段とディスプレイ装置を通信媒体に連結する
    前記インターフェースとを有し、このインターフェース
    は、 前記スキャナ手段から要求信号を受信する受信手段（３
    ０４）と、 通信媒体を介してサーバに、インターフェース識別コー
    ドとサーバから提供されるマルチメディアサービスを選
    択するオブジェクトコードとを含んだ要求コマンドを送
    信する送信手段（３０５）と、 ディスプレイ装置に出力するためサーバから送信された
    選択されたマルチメディアサービスを受信する手段（３
    ０８）と、を有することを特徴とするユーザにより操作
    されるマルチメディアの選択制御装置。
