Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a cosmetic containing a safe ingredient having a high whitening action and giving a wet touch to skin when applied to the skin, and having high effects on the prevention of skin roughness and fine wrinkles. CONSTITUTION:A solvent extract is compounded in a dry amount of 0.00005-5wt.% preferably 0.005-2wt.%, as an essential ingredient, with a cosmetic such as lotion, cream, emulsion, or pack to obtain a cosmetic having a high whitening action, smoothening skins and holding the skins in the young states. The solvent extract is obtained by extracting the barks or leaves of a Machilus plant belonging to the Lauraceae, e.g. easily available Machilus thunbergii or Machilus japonica naturally growing in the country, with water or an organic solvent such as ethanol, methanol, acetone or ethyl ether, preferably ethanol.
