本発明の第1実施形態による液晶表示装置10について説明する。図1は、第1実施形態による液晶表示装置10の構成を例示する概略断面図である。液晶表示装置10は、偏光板610および偏光板620と、液晶パネル100と、位相差補償材520とを備える。
基板面内の座標軸をXY軸とし、基板法線をZ軸とする。X軸方向の主屈折率をNxとし、Y軸方向の主屈折率をNyとし、Z軸方向の主屈折率をNzとする。
Aプレート(正のAプレート)は、
Nx>Ny=Nz
を満たす。
Cプレート(負のCプレート)は、
Nx=Ny>Nz
を満たす。
Oプレートは、屈折率楕円体自体が基板に対して傾いているものであり、例えば、Nx>Ny>Nzに対してY軸を回転軸として、基板法線からある角度で傾いており、基板法線から見た時には、XY平面による楕円体断面における遅相軸がY軸方向になる。ただし、上記の条件に限定されるわけではなく、楕円体形状およびその傾きによって、Y軸方向が進相軸になってもよい。
第2実施形態による液晶表示装置10について説明する。図4は、第2実施形態による液晶表示装置10の構成を例示する概略断面図である。第2実施形態の液晶表示装置10は、液晶パネル100に形成された位相差補償層510が、Cプレート511およびOプレート512を備え、液晶パネル100の外側に配置された位相差補償材520が、1枚のOプレート521を備える点で、第1実施形態と異なる。
次に、上述の実施形態の応用例として、投射型表示装置(プロジェクター)について説明する。図5は、応用例によるプロジェクター800の光学系を例示する模式図である。プロジェクター800は、光源装置801と、インテグレーター804と、偏光変換素子805と、色分離導光光学系802と、光変調装置としての液晶光変調装置810R、液晶光変調装置810G、 液晶光変調装置810Bと、クロスダイクロイックプリズム812および投写光学系814と、を具備して構成されている。

- 一対の偏光板と、
前記一対の偏光板間に、
負のCプレートを含む位相差補償層とレンズ層とが設けられた対向基板と、誘電率異方性が負でプレチルトが付与された液晶を含む液晶層と、素子基板とを含み、前記対向基板側から光が入射される液晶パネルと、
前記液晶パネルの外側に配置され、OプレートまたはAプレートを含む位相差補償材と、
を備え、
前記位相差補償層は、前記レンズ層と前記液晶層との間に設けられている、
液晶表示装置。 - 前記素子基板は、画素電極と、前記画素電極の縁に沿って設けられた遮光部材とを含む、
請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記位相差補償材は、2枚のOプレートを含む、
