Description
一対の偏光板間に液晶セルを挟持してなる液晶表示素子と、
この液晶表示素子の裏面側に重設される光学シートと、
この光学シートの裏面側に重設される面光源のバックライトと
を備える方形の液晶表示モジュールであって、
上記光学シートが、光学的異方性がある樹脂製の基材フィルムを有しており、
短辺方向を基準として、上記バックライト表面から出射される光線の偏光方向の角度をγ、裏面側偏光板の透過軸方向の角度をδとすると、上記基材フィルムの結晶軸方向の角度が、下記数式(I)及び数式(II)で計算される数値εを中心とした±50%範囲内、換言すると0.5ε以上1.5ε以下であることを特徴とする。
(I)γ≦δの場合 ε=γ+(δ−γ)/2
(II)γ≧δの場合 ε=δ+(γ−δ)/2
図3に示すようにエッジライト型バックライトの構成が、
A:プリズム導光板単体の場合、及び
B:プリズム導光板及び逆プリズムシートが重畳される場合
において、ランプ方向と垂直方向の視野角輝度測定を行った。その際、測定器の偏光フィルターの角度を調節し、
(1)ランプと垂直成分の偏光成分(測定器偏光板フィルター透過軸垂直)
(2)ランプと平行成分の偏光成分(測定器偏光板フィルター透過軸平行)
を測定した。その結果を図4に示す。
図3に示す導光板/逆プリズムシートの構成のバックライトから出射する光線の偏光特性を確認し、ノーマル導光板のみのバックライトと対比する。ランプの方向と垂直方向を0°とし、これらのバックライト上に偏光板を積層し、この偏光板の透過軸を0°の位置から10°づつ回転させ、正面輝度データを測定した。ノーマル導光板のみのバックライトも同様に測定した。その結果を図5に示す。
上述の測定結果を元に、導光板等から出射した光線の偏光特性を偏光板の透過軸へ効率よく変換させるための当該基材フィルム9の結晶軸角度α及び位相差の最適値を求める計算を行う。
(I)γ≦δの場合 ε=γ+(δ−γ)/2
(II)γ≧δの場合 ε=δ+(γ−δ)/2
当該基材フィルム9表面の結晶軸の進相軸方向及び遅相軸方向をx方向及びy方向、基材フィルム9の厚さをd、x方向及びy方向の屈折率をnx及びny(nx≠ny)、結晶軸方向と偏光子Pの透過軸方向との角度をψ、偏光子Pの透過軸方向と検光子Qの透過軸方向との角度をβとすると、検光子Qを通過した光の変位は下記数式(1)で表され、透過光強度は下記数式(2)で表され、RGB3波長の平均透過光強度IAが下記数式(3)で表される。
上述の測定結果から、一般的には、エッジライト型バックライト表面から出射される光線の偏光方向mはランプ8方向と垂直方向であり、液晶表示モジュールにおける裏面側偏光板5の透過軸方向nはランプ8方向と垂直方向に対して±π/4である。そのため、上記数式(1)(2)及び(3)において、β=π/4、Re=λ/2とし、ψと平均透過光強度IAとの関係を計算した。その結果を図6(a)に示す。
上述の測定結果及びシミュレーション結果に基づき、最適なβ=π/4、ψ=−(β/2)の角度に配置した場合における平均透過光強度IAとリタデーション値との関係を計算した。その結果を図7に示す。
(a)マイクロレンズアレイ23表面の反転形状を有するシート型に合成樹脂及び基材フィルム9をこの順に積層し、シート型を剥がすこと当該光学シート20を形成する方法、
(b)シート化された樹脂を再加熱して基材フィルム9と共にマイクロレンズアレイ23表面の反転形状を有する金型と金属板との間にはさんでプレスして形状を転写する方法、
(c)マイクロレンズアレイ23表面の反転形状を周面に有するロール型と他のロールとのニップに溶融状態の樹脂及び基材フィルム9を通し、上記形状を転写する押出しシート成形法、
(d)基材フィルム9に紫外線硬化型樹脂を塗布し、上記と同様の反転形状を有するシート型、金型又はロール型に押さえ付けて未硬化の紫外線硬化型樹脂に形状を転写し、紫外線をあてて紫外線硬化型樹脂を硬化させる方法、
(e)上記と同様の反転形状を有する金型又はロール型に未硬化の紫外線硬化性樹脂を充填塗布し、基材フィルム9で押さえ付けて均し、紫外線をあてて紫外線硬化型樹脂を硬化させる方法、
(f)未硬化(液状)の紫外線硬化型樹脂等を微細なノズルから基材フィルム9上にマイクロレンズ24を形成するよう射出又は吐出し、硬化させる方法、
(g)紫外線硬化型樹脂の代わりに電子線硬化型樹脂を使用する方法
などがある。
ポリエチレンテレフタレートを二軸延伸した原反から位置を変えて抜き取り、結晶軸方向が短辺方向に対して種々の角度を有する方形の基材フィルムを作成し、これに同様の光拡散層を積層することで光拡散シートを作成した。
ポリエチレンテレフタレート又はポリカーボネートを一軸延伸することで種々のリタデーション値を有する基材フィルムを作成し、これらの基材フィルムを液晶モジュールにβ=π/4、ψ=−(β/2)の角度に配置し、正面輝度を測定した。その結果を下記表2に示す。
所定のリタデーション値を有する基材フィルムに光拡散層を積層することで光拡散シートを作成し、この光拡散シートを液晶モジュールにβ=π/4、ψ=−(β/2)の角度に配置し、この角度基準として遅相軸方向及び進相軸方向を採用した場合の正面輝度を測定した。その結果を下記表3に示す。

Claims (6)
- 一対の偏光板間に液晶セルを挟持してなる液晶表示素子と、
この液晶表示素子の裏面側に重設される光学シートと、
この光学シートの裏面側に重設される面光源のバックライトと
を備える方形の液晶表示モジュールであって、
上記光学シートが、
光学的異方性がある樹脂製の基材フィルムと、
この基材フィルムの一方の面に積層される光拡散層と
を有しており、
上記基材フィルムを構成するマトリックス樹脂としてポリエチレンテレフタレートが用いられており、
上記光拡散層が、複数の光拡散剤とそのバインダーとを有し、このバインダーを構成するポリマー組成物に上記光拡散剤を混合した組成物を上記基材フィルム表面へコーティングすることで形成されており、
短辺方向を基準として、上記バックライト表面から出射される光線の偏光方向の角度をγ、裏面側偏光板の透過軸方向の角度をδとすると、上記基材フィルムの結晶軸方向の角度が、下記数式(I)及び数式(II)で計算される数値εを中心とした±50%範囲内であることを特徴とする液晶表示モジュール。
(I)γ≦δの場合 ε=γ+(δ−γ)/2
(II)γ≧δの場合 ε=δ+(γ−δ)/2 - 上記基材フィルムの結晶軸方向が進相軸方向である請求項1に記載の液晶表示モジュール。
- 上記基材フィルムのリタデーション値が140nm以上390nm以下である請求項1又は請求項2に記載の液晶表示モジュール。
- 上記光学シートが、基材フィルムの他方の面に積層され、バインダー中にビーズが分散するスティッキング防止層を有している請求項1、請求項2又は請求項3に記載の液晶表示モジュール。
- 上記バックライトとして、エッジライト型バックライトが用いられている請求項1から請求項4のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示モジュール。
- 上記液晶表示素子とバックライトとの間に他の光学シートを備えており、
この他の光学シートの基材フィルムとして低リタデーションフィルムが使用されている請求項1から請求項5のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示モジュール。
