Claims (24)
- 画素内に反射領域と透過領域とを有し、液晶層と、前記液晶層を挟んで対向し、光軸が直交する一対の偏光板とを備え、前記液晶層の電圧が印加されていない状態での液晶配向方向が、前記一対の偏光板のうちのいずれか一方の偏光板の光軸と平行であり、前記液晶層が横電界駆動される半透過型液晶表示装置において、
前記反射領域における前記液晶層の実効レタデーションがλ/4に設定され、前記透過領域における前記液晶層の実効レタデーションがλ/2に設定され、
各画素の前記反射領域と前記透過領域とが互いに反転駆動され、前記反射領域は前記液晶層に電圧が印加されていない状態において白を表示し、前記透過領域は前記液晶層に電圧が印加されていない状態において黒を表示し、
前記一対の偏光板のうちのいずれか一方の偏光板は、前記反射領域と前記透過領域とに共通に配置され、
前記反射領域に対応して、前記共通に配置される偏光板と前記液晶層との間に、透過光にλ/2の位相差を与える位相差層を備え、
前記共通に配置される偏光板から前記位相差層に入射する光の偏光方向と、前記位相差層の光学軸との間の角度θが、0°<θ<22.5°の範囲にあることを特徴とする半透過型液晶表示装置。 - 前記反射領域の前記液晶層に電圧を印加して黒を表示した場合に、前記液晶層に電圧が印加されていない状態での液晶配向方向から前記液晶層の液晶配向方向が回転する角度は、前記透過領域の前記液晶層に電圧を印加して白を表示した場合に、前記液晶層に電圧が印加されていない状態での液晶配向方向から前記液晶層の液晶配向方向が回転する角度よりも小さいことを特徴とする、請求項1に記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記反射領域では、前記液晶層に電圧を印加して黒を表示する場合に、前記液晶層に電圧が印加されていない状態での液晶配向方向から前記液晶層の液晶配向方向を45°−2θ回転させることを特徴とする、請求項1又は2に記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記反射領域では、前記液晶層に電圧が印加されていない状態での液晶配向方向から前記液晶層の液晶配向方向を45°−2θ回転させた状態で、前記位相差層と前記液晶層とがλ/4波長板として機能するように、前記位相差層及び前記液晶層のレタデーションがそれぞれ調整されていることを特徴とする、請求項3に記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記角度θが、0°<θ≦10°の範囲にあることを特徴とする請求項1〜4の何れか一に記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記位相差層が負の複屈折率位相差層であることを特徴とする、請求項1〜5の何れか一に記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 1画素が、RGBの各色に対応した少なくとも3つのサブ画素を含んでおり、緑色の波長の光(波長550nm)に対する前記液晶層及び前記位相差層のレタデーションをそれぞれΔn1G(550)×d1、Δn2G(550)×d2とし、青色の波長の光(波長450nm)に対する前記液晶層及び前記位相差層のレタデーションをそれぞれΔn1B(450)×d1、Δn2B(450)×d2としたとき、

- 前記第1のスイッチング手段が前記反射領域の画素電極に供給されるデータ信号を供給するデータ線に接続され、前記第2のスイッチング手段が前記透過領域の画素電極に供給されるデータ信号を供給するデータ線に接続されていることを特徴とする、請求項16に記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記反射領域の画素電極と前記透過領域の画素電極との何れか一方に供給するデータ信号の階調を、所望の階調に変換する反射透過切替え手段を有することを特徴とする、請求項19又は20に記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記反射透過切替え手段が、データ信号を記憶する記憶手段と、前記記憶手段に記憶されたデータ信号の階調を変換する画素階調変換手段とを有し、前記記憶手段に記憶されたデータ信号を前記反射領域の画素電極又は前期透過領域の画素電極の一方に供給し、前記画素階調変換手段からの出力を前記反射領域の画素電極又は前記透過領域の画素電極の他方に供給することを特徴とする、請求項21に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記画素階調変換手段が、ルックアップテーブルを元に階調を変換することを特徴とする、請求項22に記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記ルックアップテーブルには、前記反射領域に対応する画素と前記透過領域に対応する画素の一方が最大階調となるときに他方が最小階調となる互いに逆特性の階調に変換するテーブルが記録されていることを特徴とする、請求項23に記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
