Description
互いに対向して配置された第1基板と第2基板との間にホモジニアス配向した液晶分子を含む液晶層を保持した液晶表示パネルと、
前記液晶表示パネルの一方の外面に設けられ、第1偏光板、及び、この第1偏光板と前記液晶表示パネルとの間に配置された第1位相差板及び第2位相差板を含む第1光学素子と、
前記液晶表示パネルの他方の外面に設けられた第2偏光板を含む第2光学素子と、を備え、
前記第1位相差板は、所定波長の光に所定の位相差を与えるとともにネマティック液晶分子を法線方向に沿ってハイブリッド配向した状態で固定化させた位相差板であることを特徴とする。
次に、この実施の形態に係る液晶表示装置の実施例について説明する。この液晶表示装置は、例えば、以下のようにして設計される。

- 互いに対向して配置された第1基板と第2基板との間にホモジニアス配向した液晶分子を含む液晶層を保持した液晶表示パネルと、
前記液晶表示パネルの一方の外面に設けられ、第1偏光板、及び、この第1偏光板と前記液晶表示パネルとの間に配置された第1位相差板及び第2位相差板を含み、前記液晶層に略直線偏光の偏光状態を有する光が入射するように自身を通過する光の偏光状態を制御する第1光学素子と、
前記液晶表示パネルの他方の外面に設けられた第2偏光板を含む第2光学素子と、を備え、
前記第1位相差板は、前記第2位相差板及び前記液晶表示パネルの外面にそれぞれ接する液晶フィルム層であって所定波長の光に所定の位相差を与えるとともにネマティック液晶分子を法線方向に沿ってハイブリッド配向した状態で固定化させた液晶フィルム層によって構成され、
前記第1光学素子において、前記第1偏光板の吸収軸と前記第2位相差板の遅相軸とのなす角度が略45度に設定され、前記第1位相差板の遅相軸と前記液晶層に含まれる液晶分子のダイレクターとが略平行に設定され、且つ、前記第1位相差板の遅相軸と前記第2位相差板の遅相軸とのなす角度が略90度に設定され、
前記第2光学素子において、前記第2偏光板の吸収軸と前記第1偏光板の吸収軸とのなす角度が略90度に設定され、
前記液晶層の残留位相差と前記第1位相差板の正面位相差との和は、前記第2位相差板の正面位相差と略等しいことを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 前記第2光学素子は、前記第2偏光板と前記液晶表示パネルとの間に第3位相差板を含み、
前記第3位相差板は、その面内での互いに直交する方位の屈折率をそれぞれnx及びnyとし、その法線方位の屈折率をnzとしたときに、nx=ny>nzの関係の屈折率異方性を有することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。 - さらに、前記第1光学素子側から前記液晶表示パネルを照明するバックライトユニットを備えたことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
