Claims (3)
- 映像信号を構成するフィールドの各々を複数のサブフィールドで構成して表示パネルに形成されている表示セルを駆動する表示パネルの駆動方法であって、
(a)前記映像信号の各フレーム毎または所定数のフレーム毎に輝度分布を検出するステップと、
(b)前記フィールドの各々を、2のべき乗に比例する発光維持期間が夫々に割り当てられているN個(Nは1以上の整数)のサブフィールドからなる第1サブフィールド群と、M個(Mは1以上の整数)のサブフィールドからなる第2サブフィールド群とに分割するステップと、
(c)前記第1サブフィールド群内において、前記映像信号に基づき前記N個のサブフィールドによる2 N 通りのサブフィールドの組み合わせの内から1の組み合わせを選択し、前記1の組み合わせによる各サブフィールドで前記表示セルを発光させる2のN乗階調駆動ステップと、
(d)前記第2サブフィールド群内において、前記映像信号に基づき先頭のサブフィールドから連続配置されたサブフィールドによる(M+1)通りのサブフィールドの組み合わせの内から1の組み合わせを選択し、前記1の組み合わせによる各サブフィールドで前記表示セルを発光させる(M+1)階調駆動ステップと、を備え、
前記ステップ(b)は、前記輝度分布が高輝度領域または中輝度領域に偏る分布へ変化した場合には前記第1サブフィールド群に割り当てるサブフィールド数Nを減少させると共に前記第2サブフィールド群に割り当てるサブフィールド数Mを増加させる一方、前記輝度分布が低輝度領域に偏る分布へ変化した場合には前記第1サブフィールド群に割り当てるサブフィールド数Nを増加させると共に前記第2サブフィールド群に割り当てるサブフィールド数Mを減少させるステップを含むことを特徴とする表示パネルの駆動方法。 - 請求項1に記載の表示パネルの駆動方法であって、前記フィールドの各々に含まれるサブフィールドの総数は一定であることを特徴とする表示パネルの駆動方法。
- 映像信号を構成するフィールドの各々を複数のサブフィールドで構成して表示パネルに形成されている表示セルを駆動する表示パネルの駆動装置であって、
前記映像信号の各フレーム毎または所定数のフレーム毎に輝度分布を検出する輝度分布検出部と、
前記フィールドの各々を、2のべき乗に比例する発光維持期間が夫々に割り当てられているN個(Nは1以上の整数)のサブフィールドからなる第1サブフィールド群と、M個(Mは1以上の整数)のサブフィールドからなる第2サブフィールド群とに分割するサブフィールド割り当て部と、
前記映像信号に基づき前記第1サブフィールド群内において前記N個のサブフィールドによる2 N 通りのサブフィールドの組み合わせの内から1の組み合わせを選択し前記1の組み合わせによる各サブフィールドで前記表示セルを発光させ、前記第2サブフィールド群内において先頭のサブフィールドから連続配置されたサブフィールドによる(M+1)通りのサブフィールドの組み合わせの内から1の組み合わせを選択し前記1の組み合わせによる各サブフィールドで前記表示セルを発光させる駆動部と、を備え、
前記サブフィールド割り当て部は、前記輝度分布が高輝度領域または中輝度領域に偏る分布へ変化した場合には前記第1サブフィールド群に割り当てるサブフィールド数Nを減少させると共に前記第2サブフィールド群に割り当てるサブフィールド数Mを増加させる一方、前記輝度分布が低輝度領域に偏る分布へ変化した場合には前記第1サブフィールド群に割り当てるサブフィールド数Nを増加させると共に前記第2サブフィールド群に割り当てるサブフィールド数Mを減少させることを特徴とする表示パネルの駆動装置。
