Abstract

Description
まず、液晶層53に電圧を印加しないときの反射領域55の動作について説明する。反射領域55では、液晶層53には第1偏光板51を通過した90°方向(縦方向)の直線偏光が入射する。液晶層53では、液晶層に入射した直線偏光の光学軸方向と、液晶分子の長軸方向が一致しているため、90°の直線偏光のまま液晶層53を通過し、反射板54で反射する。直線偏光の場合、反射しても直線偏光のままなので、90°直線偏光のまま、再度、液晶層53に入射する。更に90°直線偏光のまま液晶層53を出射して第1偏光板51に入射するが、第1偏光板の偏光軸方向も90°のため、第1偏光板51を通過する。よって、電圧を印加しない場合、白表示となる。
次いで、液晶層53に電圧を印加した状態における反射領域55の動作について説明する。液晶層53には、第1偏光板51を通過した90°方向(縦方向)の直線偏光が入射する。液晶層53では、電圧印加により、液晶層53における液晶層の長軸方向が、基板面内で0°から45°に変化する。液晶層53に入射した光の偏光方向と液晶分子の長軸方向とが45°ずれており、また、液晶のリタデーションがλ/4に設定されているため、液晶層53に入射した縦方向の直線偏光は、右回りの円偏光状態となって反射板54に入射する。この右回りの円偏光は、反射板54で反射し、左回りの円偏光状態となる。液晶層53に入射した左回りの円偏光は、液晶層53を再び通過し、横方向(0°方向)の直線偏光となって、第1偏光板51に入射する。第1偏光板51の偏光軸方向は90°のため、反射板54が反射した光を通過させることができず、黒表示となる。このように、反射領域55では電圧無印加で白表示、電圧印加状態で黒表示となるノーマリーホワイト表示となる。
次に、液晶層53に電圧を印加しないときの透過領域56の動作について説明する。透過領域56では、液晶層53には、第2偏光板52を通過した横方向の直線偏光が入射する。液晶層53では、入射光の偏光方向と分子方向長軸方向が直行しているため、偏光状態を変化させることなく、横方向の直線偏光のまま液晶層53を通過し、第1偏光板51に入射する。第1偏光板51の偏光軸方向は90°のため、透過光は、第1偏光板51を通過することができず、黒表示となる。
液晶層53に電圧を印加しないときの透過領域56の動作について説明する。透過領域56では、液晶層53には、第2偏光板52を通過した横方向の直線偏光が入射する。液晶層53では、電圧印加により、液晶層53における液晶層の長軸方向が、基板面内で0°から45°に変化する。液晶層53に入射した光の偏光方向と液晶分子の長軸方向とが45°ずれており、また、液晶のリタデーションがλ/2に設定されているため、液晶層53に入射した横方向の直線偏光は、縦方向の直線偏光となって第1偏光板51に入射する。従って、透過領域56では、第1偏光板51は、第2偏光板52に通過したバックライト光を透過させて、白表示となる。このように、透過領域56では、電圧無印加で黒表示、電圧印加状態では白表示となるノーマリーブラック表示となる。

Claims (17)
- 画素内に反射領域と透過領域とを有し、液晶層を挟んで対向する一対の偏光板を備え、横電界駆動される半透過型の液晶表示装置において、
前記一対の偏光板のうちで前記反射領域と透過領域とで共通の偏光板と、前記液晶層との間に1/2波長板を備えることを特徴とする半透過型液晶表示装置。 - 各画素が、各画素の反射領域及び透過領域に共通のデータ信号で駆動される画素電極と、複数の画素の反射領域に共通の第1共通信号が印加される第1共通電極と、複数の画素の透過領域に共通の第2共通信号が印加される第2共通電極とを備えることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記透過領域における黒表示時の液晶層の光学軸方向と、前記液晶層に入射する光の偏光方向との角度θ1が、0°≦θ1<45°の範囲にあることを特徴とする、請求項1又は2に記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記θ1が、0°≦θ1≦22.5°の範囲にあることを特徴とする、請求項3に記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記反射領域における黒表示時の液晶層の光学軸方向と前記液晶層に入射する光の偏光方向との角度θ2が、θ2=45°であることを特徴とする、請求項1〜4の何れかに記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記透過領域で、黒表示時に、前記一対の偏光板のうちの前記透過領域における光出射側の偏光板に入射する光の偏光方向と、前記光出射側の偏光板の光吸収軸方向とが一致することを特徴とする、請求項1〜5の何れか一に記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記一対の偏光板のうちの前記透過領域における光入射側の偏光板と、前記液晶層との間に別の1/2波長板を更に備えることを特徴とする、請求項1〜6の何れか一に記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記透過領域における黒表示時の液晶層の光学軸方向と、前記液晶層に入射する光の偏光方向との角度θ1が0°であり、前記別の1/2波長板と前記液晶層との間に、所定の光学特性を有する位相差板を更に備えることを特徴とする、請求項7に記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記位相差板が、遅相軸方向の屈折率をnx、進相軸方向の屈折率をny、厚み方向の屈折率をnz、厚みをdとしたとき、−0.3≦(nx−nz)/(nx−ny)≦0.3、又は(nx−nz)/(nx−ny)=1.0で規定される光学特性を有し、(nx−ny)×dの値が前記液晶層とリタデーションとほぼ等しく、かつ、前記位相差板の進相軸方向と液晶層光軸方向とが平行又は直交方向に配置されることを特徴とする、請求項8に記載の半透過型液晶表示装。
- 前記液晶層がホモジニアス配向であることを特徴とする、請求項1〜9の何れか一に記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記第1及び第2共通信号がそれぞれ画素電極用信号に同期して反転し、かつ、前記第1共通信号が、実質的に前記第2共通信号を反転させた信号であることを特徴とする、請求項1〜10の何れか一に記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 各画素が、データ信号が供給されるデータ線と前記反射領域の画素電極との間を接続する第1のスイッチング手段と、前記データ線と前記透過領域の画素電極との間を接続する第2のスイッチング手段とを有することを特徴とする、請求項1〜11の何れか一に記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記反射領域に形成された反射板の電位が、前記画素電極の電位と前記第1の共通電極の電位との間の中間電位に設定されることを特徴とする、請求項1〜12の何れか一に記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
- 前記反射板には、前記画素電極及び前記第1共通電極との容量結合によって前記中間電位が印加されることを特徴とする、請求項13に記載の半透過型液晶表示装置。
