本発明の放香防虫製品の好ましい形態は、放香器が造花を備え、よりインテリア性が具備されたものである。そして、防虫材を造花の集合体が形成する間隙や花弁内等に装填するようにすれば、防虫材の装着を造花で被って造花のインテリア性を保持できるとともに、薬剤含浸担体に皮膚等が触れる危惧を極力排除できるというメリットを有する。
造花は、布又はプラスチック製で、アジサイ、スズラン、バラ、除虫菊など、各種の花を模して作製される。プラスチックの材質としては、薬剤非吸着性のポリエスル(PET、PBTなど)、ポリアミド、ポリアセタール等が好ましいが、造花の集合体が形成する間隙が比較的大きい場合などはPEやPPでも構わない。
また、造花の見かけの体積は100〜1000cm3程度がよく、ここで、見かけの体積とは、以下の測定方法に従って得られる値を意味する。
1)先ず造花部分をプラスチック製の袋に入れる。
2)上記袋を外部より軽く押さえて内部の空気を抜きながら、造花の外周に相当する部分を袋外部よりヒートシールして袋を密封する。
3)次に、水の張った大きめの腰高シャーレに上記2)で得られた造花入りの袋を沈め、その際の体積の増加分を「造花の見かけの体積」とする。
更に、造花の枝の材質として屈曲性の高いものを用い、造花の位置関係を任意に変えられる形態を採用することも有用である。

粒径3mmで緑色に着色したビスコパール0.8gに、4−メチル−2,3,5,6−テトラフルオロベンジル−2,2−ジメチル−3−(1−プロペニル)シクロプロパンカルボキシレート(化合物E)100mgとパラフィン系溶剤20mgからなる薬液を均一に含浸させ、この薬剤含浸担体2を金属製ネット保持体3に収納して防虫材(葉を模した形状)4を調製した。放香器5に備えられた造花(スズランを模して作製)6の茎部に、前記防虫材4を装填して、本発明の放香防虫製品1を得た。なお、放香器5は、ジャスミン系芳香液を充填し吸液芯7を具備した薬液ボトル8の上部に造花支持台9が配設されたものである。
こうして得られた放香防虫製品1をリビングのサイドボードの上に置いて夏季使用したところ、常温揮散性防虫成分の1日あたりの揮散量は1.4mg/日で、およそ2ケ月間にわたり、蚊の刺咬被害を受けることなく芳香感を満喫できた。また、防虫材4は造花本来の葉とほとんど区別がつかず、造花のインテリア性を損なうこともなかった。10月以降は防虫材4を取りはずし、放香機能のみ奏する製品として使用を継続した。

大きさが2×3cmの波状段ボールを高さ3cmに積層して形成したセルロース製ハニカム構造体10に、4−メトキシメチル−2,3,5,6−テトラフルオロベンジル−2,2−ジメチル−3−(1−プロペニル)シクロプロパンカルボキシレート(化合物H)200mgとパラフィン系溶剤50mgからなる薬液を含浸させ、これを防虫材4として供した。ラベンダー系芳香ゲル収納容器11の上方に設けた通気性シート12の上に防虫材4(10)を載置し、蒸散孔13とゼンマイ[図示せず]で駆動するファン14を有するキャップ15を被せて本発明の放香防虫製品1を得た。
こうして得られた放香防虫製品1を、夏の間玄関の棚に置いて使用した。朝、ゼンマイを手動させて外出したところ、日中ファンが作動して防虫成分と香料が効率的に拡散し、夕方の帰宅時に玄関から蚊が侵入するのを完全に抑止できるとともに、芳香感を楽しめた。常温揮散性防虫成分の1日あたりの揮散量は3.0mg/日で、この1日毎のサイクルを2ケ月間継続できた。その後、防虫材4(10)を取りはずし、冬季は放香機能のみ奏する製品として使用した。

試験の結果、本発明の放香防虫製品は、特定の常温揮散性防虫成分を含む防虫材を放香器に装填することによって、実用的な吸血阻止効果、即ち虫よけ効果を奏し得ることが確認された。なお、本発明で用いる常温揮散性防虫成分のうち、エムペントリンや化合物C(トランスフルトリン)に比べて、一般式(II)に該当する防虫成分の方がより有用で、薬剤含浸担体の表面積を放香防虫製品当たり100cm2以下にコンパクト化できることも認められた。かかる本発明の放香防虫製品は、防虫材が取りはずし可能に放香器に装填されているので、通常の放香機能を保持した上で、所望の時期だけ実用的な虫よけ作用を付与することが可能である。
これに対し、比較例1のように、蒸気圧の比較的低いd,d−T80−プラレトリンを用いた場合、蚊に対する吸血阻止効果が低かった。特開2000−247807号公報の開示技術に基づく比較例2では、放香機能と虫よけ作用を分けることができず、また、広い面積のシート状含浸担体を要するため、この薬剤含浸担体を用いて造花を形成した結果は、インテリア性が劣るばかりか、薬剤含浸担体に皮膚等が触れやすいという安全性上の危惧が免れ得なかった。更に、特開2003−189777号公報が開示する比較例3の方法では、エアゾールの種類を替えて所望の時期だけ虫よけ作用を付与することはできるが、エアゾールを多種類準備する必要がある上、比較例2と同様に安全性上の問題が避けられず本発明の目的に合致しなかった。
