従来から、美白、シワの防止、皮膚のハリやツヤの改善などの美容を目的とした種々の化粧品が用いられている。しかし、化粧品の使用は局所的または対処的なものにすぎないため、不十分である場合が多い。

美容の目的のために、種々の美容食品、例えば、コラーゲン粉末と杜仲茶エキスとを含有する食品などが報告されている(例えば、特許文献1)。さらに、皮膚の色素沈着を防止するために、アスコルビン酸とL−システインとを配合した健康食品などが市販されている。しかし、これらの食品の美容効果は十分とはいえない。
