Abstract
Mica is added to the metal powder before compaction and sintering. Powdered mica is pref. added to and mixed with the desired metal powders, esp. using by wt. 0.5-2% of mica in the metal powders, which pref. produce a steel object employed as a valve seat; a piston segment; a sealing ring; a gear wheel; or a piston in shock absorbers. The sintered object may be repressed, and/or heat treated, and/or impregnated with other metals, eg. Cu. The mica addn. increases the density obtd. for a given pressing force cf. conventional lubricants.
