Abstract
There is provided a system of alerting an excavation vehicle operator of a risk of excavation of protected terrain, the system comprising: a location detection unit; a motion detection unit; an orientation determination unit; and a processing circuitry configured to: a) obtain digital map data informative of one or more zones of subsurface utility infrastructure, b) responsive to detecting that: i) the vehicle is stationary, and ii) a reach of a digging implement of the excavation vehicle overlaps with one or more of the zones of subsurface utility infrastructure with tolerance margins, perform an alert action, wherein the reach of the digging implement is in accordance with: i. the current vehicle location, ii. a current orientation of the vehicle, and iii. a maximum digging implement extension distance.
